As far back as the Middle Ages, people began to notice that the phases of the moon affect the growth and development of plants. Since then, many gardeners and farmers have been following the lunar calendar to get the best results when caring for plants, including pruning fruit trees.

It is believed that the most favourable time to prune trees is during their dormant period, when the tree spends less energy on growth and regeneration. This is usually late autumn or early spring when tree activity is minimal.

It is important to consider that the Moon affects the movement of sap in living organisms. When the Moon is rising, the sap begins to rise upwards, enhancing the growth processes. On the contrary, when the Moon is waning, the movement of juices slows down. It is on the waning Moon that it is considered most successful to prune trees, as this minimises trauma to the plant and helps it recover more quickly.

It is strongly not recommended to prune trees during the full moon and new moon. During these periods the energy processes in plants are either too active or, on the contrary, practically slowed down, which can harm the tree.

In addition, pruning should not be carried out in rainy weather. A wet environment can favour the development of fungi and infections, which will impair the healing of cuts on the tree and can cause disease.

Thus, when planning pruning of fruit trees, it is worthwhile to be guided by the lunar calendar, choosing the waning moon and avoiding full moon, new moon and rainy periods.
